Courtney Joiner Honored as SULC Distinguished Alumni
Read Time: 2 minsMcGlinchey Stafford is pleased to announce that Member Courtney Joiner has been recognized as a 2024 Distinguished Alumni by Southern University Law Center (SULC). Honorees will be celebrated at a ceremony during the SULC Alumni and Friends Round-Up on Thursday, April 4, 2024. Distinguished Alumni are selected for their professional achievements and support of the Law Center.
“Courtney is very deserving of this recognition – both for his professional accomplishments and devotion to SULC,” said Zelma Murray Frederick, Managing Member of McGlinchey’s Baton Rouge office. “Courtney is passionate about his work and clients, and I’m proud to call him my colleague and friend.”
Based in McGlinchey’s Baton Rouge office, Courtney is a labor and employment attorney, litigator, and former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the DOJ. With a particular focus on Louisiana education law, he has worked on numerous significant cases, including one which required the Louisiana Supreme Court to clarify the scope of the school immunity law. He also served as special counsel to the State of Louisiana, the City of Monroe, and local counsel to the nation’s largest freight railroad company.
Courtney earned his law degree from the Southern University of Law Center, where he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Southern University Law Review. He holds a B.A. and M.A. degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM), where he was a student-athlete and a member of the ULM football and track teams. He now serves as a member of the ULM Athletic Foundation’s Board of Trustees. He was a recipient of the Baton Rouge Bar Association’s President’s Award in 2020. In October, 2023, Courtney was invited to deliver the keynote address during SULC’s Law Review Induction Ceremony.
The 2024 SULC Distinguished Alumni include Joiner (’07), Gregory Brumfield, Jr. (’09), Booker T. Carmichael (’03), and Samuel J. Spurgeon (’12).
